Museum Object Handling Sessions
Let us bring the museum to your school
Developed in consultation with local special schools our museum object handling sessions offer pupils the opportunity to explore replica and original artefacts in their own classroom.
Objects have been specially selected for their suitability for use with pupils with additional needs and the sessions can be presented in a variety of ways, flexible in time and structure to suit the individual needs of your pupils.
Depending on the colour modules you choose, you can have:
Pink module – 2 hours of sessions per year
Purple module – 3 hours of sessions per year
Green module – 8 hours of sessions per year
My Town – ‘A Journey Through Roman Leicester’
Take a trip through Roman Leicester in your classroom. A great hands-on session with costumes, replica objects and multi-sensory props and visuals. The session can be delivered at 3 cognitive/ linguistic levels to suit the needs of your pupils.
Birth to 36 months – sensory object handling – Max group size 6 pupils + adult support
36 months to 5 years – story, object handling and costumes – Max group size 12 pupils + adult support
5 to 8 years – story, object handling, simple factual information and costumes – Max group size 12 pupils + adult support
Session length: 30 minutes
My Home – ‘Welcome to my Victorian Home’ (coming soon)
Homes in Victorian times were very different to the house you live in today! You’ll handle real objects, wear replica costumes and discover what cooking, cleaning and going to bed was like long ago

My Toys – ‘My Toys Long Ago’
Toys in Victorian times were not like the ones you play with now! You’ll have the opportunity to compare the two by handling and playing with replica old toys. What are they made of? How do they work?
Key concept: Long time ago/ now. Old/new. Same/ different/ change.
Cognitive/ linguistic level: 3 to 8 years – object handling, vocabulary, playing with toys

Session length: 30 minutes
My Clothes – ‘Felt Making for Fun’
A lovely, hands on activity using wool fibres, water and soap to make a piece of felt using the wet felting process. Great for developing fine motor skills and language. Once dry, the felt can be used to make small badges or flowers or to decorate other items.
Cognitive/ linguistic level: 8 years and above
Max group size 12 pupils + adult support
Session length: 30 -45 minutes
‘Seasides Now and Seasides Then’
Unpack a very old trunk and find out what Victorian people took to the sea side 120 years ago. How did they get there? What did they wear? What did they eat? What games did they play?
Key concept: Long time ago/ now. Old/new. Same/ different/ change
Cognitive/ linguistic level: 3 to 8 years
Object handling, vocabulary, costumes and photo boards, clay shells, playing with old toys
